John has 20 years' experience in the electricity industry
having joined the South of Scotland Electricity Board as a
graduate trainee in 1984. Following 5 years of experience
in power station operations he moved to Scottish Power’s
central production control team with responsibility for demand
forecasting and optimisation of the generation portfolio.

In 1990 John moved to join Scottish Nuclear
where he was responsible for developing and implementing the
contract for the sale of the company’s 15TWh annual
output and led contract negotiations with customers. In 1995
and 1996 John played a key role in the privatisation of British
Energy with responsibility for the technical due diligence
process and publication of the share offer prospectus. |

John joined British Energy in 1996 initially
with responsibility for corporate strategy and planning before
joining the North American business development group as Business
Development Manager. Based in the US for 3 years he was responsible
for the identification of nuclear asset acquisition opportunities
and was instrumental the in completion of three successful
acquisitions for AmerGen (British Energy’s joint venture
with Exelon). He then moved to Canada to support the completion
of British Energy’s lease of Bruce Power. During this
period John was Head of Strategy & Analysis and was responsible
for developing trading strategy and for negotiating operating
and sales licences with the provincial energy regulator. |

On returning to the UK, John rejoined British
Energy where he provided input to the company’s contribution
to the Government’s energy policy white paper, ran two
consultancy projects providing commercial advice to eastern
European utilities and led projects (with BNFL and AECL) investigating
the prospects for new nuclear build in the UK. Prior to leaving
British Energy he led the technical due diligence required
for the company’s successful financial restructuring
and managed the technical section of the share and bond prospectus. |

John has an honours degree in
engineering from the University of Strathclyde and an
MBA from the University of Edinburgh.
